Red light runners risk pupil safety By Julia Evans RED LIGHT runners are putting primary school pupils at risk. Shirley Primary School, the city council and the police are acting quickly after fears for pupils safety when crossing Shirley Rd. There is a signalised pedestrian crossing outside the school but red light runners have caused serious concern. Deputy principal Sandra Jamieson said it’s only a matter of time before a pupil is hurt.

“It’s not a matter of if someone gets injured. It’s when,” she said. HOW TIMES have changed. Reporter Sarla Donovan reports today (pages 6-7) on Haeata Community College six months after it opened. The school, an amalgamation of Aranui High and Aranui, Avondale and Wainoni primary schools – is full of innovation and newness. I remember Aranui High during my days there as being innovative. Great teachers who thought outside of the square and encouraged us to do the same. They also encouraged us to play basketball well, which was a bonus to the hard graft of getting through English, history, and other classes. Back then we had a buzzer that alerted us it was time to put the basketball away and go to class. The buzzer has now gone and Bob Marley music plays instead. My old school mates would have been very happy with that. – Barry Clarke

News Brighton fridge offers free food By Sarla Donovan FREE FOOD is about to be given away in New Brighton. Waimairi Beach’s Trudy Burrows is behind the project, which opens on June 27 and was inspired after she saw a newspaper article about a successful trial run in central Auckland last year. The free food fridge will offer food donated by members of the public, cafes and supermarkets. It will all be free to those who need it. “I just felt it’s the right thing to do. There’s so much hunger in the world, it’s hard to think how one can make a difference, so you end up doing nothing, and that’s what I often do. But this seemed easy. I started step-bystep and the doors just opened. The community’s been right behind it, everyone’s been so supportive.” Mrs Burrows said the city council liked the idea and were interested in starting one in the city, but she was determined that New Brighton was the right community to do it in. “For me, it had to be Brighton first; I guess because I live here, my passion is here.”

The fridge, in the grounds of St Faith’s Church on Hawke St will be open 12 hours a day.

People can donate canned or unopened dry goods or surplus fresh fruits and vegetables from

their gardens. Local cafes and supermarkets are encouraged to bring down excess food at the end of the day. “Muffins, quiches, sandwiches things like that.” It’s housed in a new cedar-clad shed that’s just been assembled by her husband and son who is a builder. The fridge will be donated by Skope. Mrs Burrows is still fundraising to pay for the cost of the shed, but said businesses had donated small things which had really helped, like bricks, pens and paper bags. “Just things you don’t think of but they all add up.” She has applied to the CoastalBurwood Community Board for a grant and is also on the hunt for volunteers to help with checking stock. Everyone is welcome to take what they need from the fridge – no questions asked. “Take what you need. In Brief RICCARTON MARKET WON’T CLOSE An article on plans for New Brighton’s future in the Pegasus Post on May 30 said the Riccarton market was closing. This was incorrect. The Riccarton Rotary Club, which has run the market for 29 years, said it holds a secure lease over the property at Riccarton Park Raceway which extends well into the 2020s and the market will continue to operate “for years to come.” We apologise for the error. MONEY FOR 360 TRAIL The mayor has recommended the city council bring forward $416,160 in capital expenditure to enable the South Brighton estuary edge section of the 360 Trail walking track to be completed. The trail is about 135km long and links up many existing tracks and urban routes. The expenditure is expected to be met from other projects and will not impact on rates. FOOTPATH REPAIRS Work has begun to reseal one side of the footpath on Pages Rd between Anzac Dr and the Pages Rd bridge. The footpath on the other side will be patched up. A permanent fix will be on the cards when the bridge is rebuilt between 2021 and 2023.

Erosion fear for domain

By Sarla Donovan A PROPOSED 190m stopbank adjacent to Bridge St will reduce flood levels in South Brighton but there are questions over whether it will stop the swift rate of erosion in South Brighton Domain. Adam Perry, who has lived in the area for 43 years, has written to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board about the speed of deterioration along the estuary edge of the domain. The earthquakes caused significant land Adam Perry drop, destroying much of the existing gabion basket protection. Heavy rains in April have sped up the process, Mr Perry says, threatening to wash away new planting. “The school, campground and more are at risk from the next winter storm. Before all the hours of community planting gets washed away, can we please have some action,” he told the Pegasus Post. Mr Perry’s concerns are echoed by community board member Tim Sintes. “Water at high tide is getting

What I thought would take six months has happened in just one. If we don’t do something, the rate of erosion is going to keep speeding up.” In some places, the estuary edge had receded up to 12m, he said. Head of strategic policy at the city council, Helen Beaumont, said the repairs to the boardwalk and jetty in South New Brighton Park included erosion protection for those facilities. “A new, short length of stopbank is (also) proposed adjacent to Bridge St to fill a low point in the existing topography.

The proposed stopbank will be constructed in the vicinity of the existing estuary edge footpath. These works will not alleviate all flood risk to South New Brighton area, but it will reduce flood levels.” The proposed stopbank is currently in the design and consenting stage, she said. “The city council plans to enact the works within the next six months, but this is dependent on successful application of resource consent.” “The bund is approximately 190m long, with a maximum height of approximately 850mm (typically between 400mm and

700mm) and a crest width of approximately 1m.” Mr Perry questioned where the proposed new stopbank would start and stop. “There needs to be protection all the way along to the jetty. What’s the plan for the exposed bit in between? It doesn’t sound sufficient.” Tim Sintes said gabion baskets destroyed in the earthquakes should be rebuilt. “I want to see the protection reinstated as it was. We know it worked; why not fix it? There’s examples of baskets that didn’t slump and they are working beautifully.”

Mikey Lavender, 11, who has down syndrome, received $1399 in funding for the trike, which will enable him to build strength and cognitive ability, and allow him to go bike riding with his family in nearby Bottle Lake Forest. The Mazda Foundation is funded through a contribution from the sale of every new Mazda in New Zealand. News Raising eyebrows with a new way Reporter Sarla Donovan visits Aranui’s community school six months after it opened HAEATA. IT means “dawn.” The first appearance of light. New beginnings. The opening of Haeata Community College six months ago signposted a new era for schooling in the east. It’s a poster child for big-box classrooms, catering for up to 200 kids in one space. The year 1-13 school replaced Aranui High, Aranui Primary, Avondale Primary and Wainoni School after earthquake-damaged land and buildings and falling rolls prompted their closure. Bordering Shortland St and Breezes Rd, the size and newness of the buildings is striking. It looks like a large-scale primary school, with its sun shades, adventure playground and brightly coloured exterior panels. In the centre of the campus is a massive building housing the gymnasium, library, offices, cafeteria, kitchens and studios for music and drama. A glass-fronted atrium is at its heart, the school office tucked along one wall, in keeping with the open-plan vibe. It feels like a cross between a hotel lobby and a community hub. Opposite the office, a cafeteria displays the blackboard specials: today it’s creamy vege soup, nachos with melted cheese and a salad with bacon, haloumi and green beans. Mouse traps, wedges, pies and fruit salads feature in the cabinet. There’s only water and plain milk in the fridge and no processed food on offer. Kids sit at cafeteria tables wearing an assortment of clothing; hoodies and sneakers are popular. There is a uniform but the rules seem pretty flexible. Lavalava’s are everywhere the day I visit, all the teachers are wearing them and lots of students too.

I find out later it’s because of Samoan Language Week. There are 128 Samoans students at Haeata, making up the majority of its Pacific Island population. Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds blasts out of the sound system at 9am. Children dash through the atrium, thread around cafeteria tables and tumble out the big

glass doors, on their way to class. Principal Andy Kai Fong is determined to meet the 21stcentury head on and he’s at the helm of a school that looks and functions differently to a traditional model. Primary, intermediate and secondary-aged children sharing the same campus. Teachers

operating in shared, open plan spaces rather than individual classrooms. A strong emphasis on self-management and studentdirected learning. Laptops and phones instead of pens. Ninety minute periods. There’s a lot that’s new about Haeata, and Mr Kai Fong freely admits their approach has raised

a few eyebrows and may have lost them some students in the months since opening. He’s okay with that, and accepts there’s a possibility the roll could go down next year. They’re trying to take a more holistic approach to learning, he says, and it will take time to educate the community about what the school is trying to achieve. In spite of that, the roll of 950 is healthy. They opened with 50 per cent more students than anticipated and are catering for kids who have come from 122 different schools. That figure reflects the transience in the area, as well as the school’s distinct character, which he says has attracted families from outside the local catchment. Their philosophy has something in common with Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery, which also uses a model of personalised, studentdriven learning, though he points out most students at that school attend by choice, not because it’s their local provider. Ultimately, the aspiration is to become a viable alternative for everyone in the catchment. We have copped criticism for the level of self-management (we expect from students). For seniors particularly, it takes time to embed – we’ve flipped expectations on their head. Whatever your plan, there’s challenges.” Interestingly, Mr Kai Fong didn’t have any input into the buildings, but says it’s an amazing place to work and the big-box style has never impacted strongly on what they want to do for learning. “We utilise the buildings and furniture for what we need. We can have up to 200 students or just two in these flexible spaces.”

LEARNING: Pupils focused at Haeata Community College.

A whirlwind tour through the school’s three open-plan learning spaces throws up a busy and noisy primary school, where separate clusters of children are working with teachers. No dividers punctuate the room, apart from a half-wall which separates a group of high-needs pupils. A soft hush descends when we enter the senior school. Students are scattered around the central learning area, at tables or on the floor, intent on computers or phones. Jack’s on his laptop, writing a story for an animated computer game. The boy next to him is surfing Youtube; his self-directed learning has taken a detour. Phoenix is doing algebra – she’s planning to join the navy. While there’s not many posters or student work on display, that’s

maybe a reflection of how new this all is. In a small classroom off the main area, the familiar sight of a maths class in progress: teacher, whiteboard and four students. Small group teaching seems to be the thing here. Mr Kai Fong says as technology evolves, schools need to stay relevant and engaging to young people. It’s a balancing act. As I go to leave, a little group of kids comes trotting past behind their teacher who’s carrying a yellow cricket bat, wickets and a ball. They’re heading for the gym. She looks young, energetic, and committed. Perhaps it’s that, more than buildings or philosophy, which will determine whether Haeata becomes the school of choice for its community.

Lions choir set to perform with South Brighton Voices By Gabrielle Stuart THE LIONS Male Voice Choir will perform only once in the South Island leg of their tour – at the South Brighton Voices choir 70th jubilee concert. The 50-man choir is touring with the Lions team, and is set to perform at the three test matches and at four concerts in the North Island. Former Christchurch student, Cheuky Chan (right), is responsible for bringing the choir to the city. A concert pianist, she regularly accompanied the South Brighton Voices choir before she moved to Europe to study music, and while in Wales began accompanying the Lions Male

Voice Choir. South Brighton Voices secretary Helen Buxton said Ms Chan contacted them when she heard the choir would be touring New Zealand, and they told her about their 70thjubilee concert.

She put them in touch with the conductor, Ieuan Jones, and they agreed to arrange their trip so they could perform at the concert. Mrs Buxton said it was very exciting for the Christchurch choir members. She said the Lions choir planned to perform Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright as part of the concert, which would also feature a range of pieces from gospel songs to a piece from The Sound of Music. •The concert will be held at The Piano on Wednesday, June 28, from 7.30pm. Former classrooms prove popular By Sarla Donovan ORGANISERS ARE pleased at the response from the community with 20-plus groups or individuals interested in using nine former Central New Brighton School classrooms. Old School Community Hub project co-ordinator Rachel Welfare said interested parties included artists, a group looking for office space to run a magazine, a pregnancy care organisation and a Menz Shed group. “It’s an awesome crosssection and what we were really hoping for the space. People are continuing to apply and hopefully we’ll have a working bee at the end of the month to get the space ready for people to start moving in in July.” She said they were currently working through the process of fitting people into the rooms, as some only wanted to use space for an hour a week while others needed room full-time.

The Nurse Maude Hospice Shops are a well-known feature in Christchurch since the first hospice shop opened in Merivale nine years ago. Not quite so well-known, however, is Maudes on Trade Me. A collaboration between a local Wainoni business and the city council has seen an old playground opened with a new lease of life. Shortland playground in Wainoni faced an uncertain future when the new Wainoni Pak’n Save was rebuilt on its door step. But a joint effort from the city council and Pak’n Save saw a revamped playground opened to the public with a public planting day at the weekend. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge (left) said Pak’n Save had approached the city council in April last year with an idea to keep the playground open. Improvements included removing the existing boundary fence with Pak’n Save, removing plants that were blocking sight lines, tidying up existing garden beds and planting around 300 new plants, a play surface and new paved surfaces.

“It’s great to see the community and local businesses getting involved with the city council in the provision of parks and playgrounds,”

said Mr Rutledge. “The $50,000 contribution from Pak’n Save has kept the playground open for community use. They have designed their staffrooms so they look out over the park which also assists with passive surveillance of the space.”

Samoan Speech Competition Success To start winter off with a bang on 1st June, students from Linwood College pitted themselves against other talented Samoan speakers from Christchurch schools, as part of the annual Samoan Speech Competition. Held at Hillmorton High School, the event was opened by Leumu Gali, St Thomas of Canterbury College's Samoan Language teacher. This year’s topic was: 'Maau i ofaga, Maua'a lou faasinomaga' ('Keep your identity alive to thrive'). With more than 100 students competing, Linwood College's Gloria Sua won first place in the Year 11 section with Tala Leupolu (Year 12) achieving third place. Two Year 13s achieved placings wtih Vai Mariner getting second place and Janet Tuiloma, third.

It was Janice Tuiloma’s first competition. She and her twin Janet signed up so that they could make their families proud. Another participant, Havana described how she and others shook with nerves as they prepared to present their speeches. The Nationals which will take place in August 2017 here in Christchurch.

Samoan Language Week Celebrated To celebrate Samoan Language Week, in the first week of June students at Linwood College arranged a number of activities, including a lunch for staff. Students also performed a number of dances, engaging staff in a traditional dance.

Chess Tournament Winners

A crowd of Eastgate Library visitors settled in for double treat – tasty delicacies provided by the library staff accompanied by a peppering of performances by Linwood College students as part of the recent ‘May Music Month’. A funky, hip-hop number by Filipino students and a Bollywood dance followed the Year 7 students’ drama which kicked off the evening. The school band performed many melodious pieces. Surrounded by vibrant colours and sound, the audience clapped along to the smooth reggae tones of Tyrone TePoono as he crooned Six60’s Don’t Forget Your Roots. Adonai Schwenke’s thunderous tones reverberated Tennesse Whiskey’s lyrics throughout Eastgate to a cheering crowd. With a dabble of jazz, a smoky solo by Piper Stewart, a splash of drumming by Luke Barry, one Samoan dance later - onlookers were bursting full from the smorgasbord of

the evening’s cultural flavours. Organisers stated that the event had been inspired by Linwood College's ‘Festival of Nations’ held back in March and hope that this enchanting evening may become an annual event to showcase local talent.

As the nine o’clock bell tolled, the Linwood College hall was abuzz with the humming of table-top timers as students of all ages from across Christchurch competed. This gathering was for the annual Chess Power Interschools Tournament, held on the 22 May. Seven Linwood College students vied against students from nine local schools, achieving twenty-three wins in total. As a result Linwood College secured first place in the tournament. Senior students Marvin Brimon, Joshua Galang and Ly Jefferson Brimon as well as Ivo Craeig Baguingey (Year 8) achieved the four top placings throughout the day. Marvin Brimon came out on top, winning six matches and has been invited to compete in the National Championship to be held in Hamilton in October. Congratulations to you all!

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

1 Tbsp Fresh thyme 3 Tbsp Flour 2 cups Chicken stock 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper

Directions

Combine flour with salt in large mixing bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture is size of small peas. Stir in just enough cold water to form a dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Grease four (11cm) individual tart pans or a larger pan. Divide dough into four portions and press onto bottom and up sides of prepared pans. Line with

t the adjoining physio clinic, the four qualified physiotherapists specialise in dealing with chronic pain, such as headaches, earache, toothache, and facial and jaw pain. As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of the areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the

ear, forehead and around the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it checked and the dentist can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day, are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems, is based on deactivating

the ‘trigger points’ through handson massage therapy, to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent, Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work

on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment, as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress. The gym is open to the public for regular specialised classes for people with ailments such as diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems, and those who face difficulties following a stroke.

Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

All in a day’s work

It’s the things we do every day that total the sum of our lives, so I was thinking recently, how do we spend our time as MPs to really make a difference? While we sit in Parliament and make and debate laws – and that’s important - it’s often the little things we do that really matter in people’s lives. That’s what I’m proud of when I think about my role as a list MP in Christchurch East. My staff and I always have the door open to chat and offer a helping hand. Here are a just a few things that we’ve been up to over the past few years:

Open those roads! Some of you may remember last Christmas when Pages Road was closed Eastbound for months on end, and scheduled to open again on Christmas Eve. That wasn’t soon enough for New Brighton businesses in the Christmas shopping season, especially after two hard trading years with road closures. We had a chat with CCC and SCIRT, which came to the party and worked around the clock to get the road open two-weeks before Christmas Day.

My first Bill – a win for youth! It was a huge honour to have my first Bill – to amend the Marriage Act – read in Parliament earlier this month. The Marriage (Court Consent to Marriage of Minors) Amendment Bill seeks to protect 16 and 17-yearold minors from forced or arranged marriages by necessitating court consent to the marriage.

Immigration Immigration is a tough and emotive issue, especially for those trying to stay in New Zealand. These decisions often involve keeping families together, keeping businesses running and sticky situations all around. We’ve had plenty of immigration cases come through my office and have always done our best to support Christchurch East residents and businesses for the best outcomes. Although we can’t comment on specific cases, we’ve had very positive outcomes in the majority of them, including emergency visas.

Currently, 16 and 17-year-olds who wish to marry need only parental consent. This amendment will ensure that all minors over the age of 16 who wish to marry do so with the acceptance of the court and with equal consent from both parties.

Getting the right mix

It’s so important that we protect our young people’s rights and freedom to make their own life decisions and not to be forced into an unwanted union.

At the same time, the Government regularly reviews immigration settings to make sure that we’re getting the right mix of skills and the right quantity of people. We want to make sure that Kiwi businesses have room to grow but that the interests of everyday Kiwis are put first too.

The Bill will now head to Select Committee where it will be open to discussion and public submissions.

The Government recently raised the first remuneration threshold to $48,859 a year: applicants who earn below that threshold will have no pathway to residence. The second threshold will be set at $73,299 and applicants will automatically be considered as high-skilled. We’re also proposing changes to work visas to limit the duration and settlement expectations of lower paid visa holders. That said, we’re also proposing a new pathway to residence for 4000 long-term temporary migrant workers in the South Island – many of whom have played a key role in the Canterbury rebuild.

Something smells here... Waimairi Beach residents got whiff of a Christchurch City Council (CCC) plan to move the dump site closer to their homes. They were understandably unhappy and approached my office to see if we could help them out of the quagmire. I looked over the plan and met with Minister Brownlee, and we asked that the plan be overturned. It was, and residents and CCC agreed on an alternative site where the offending odours wouldn’t intrude. Another win for locals!

Government support for the East

Sometimes it’s not until we look back that we realise how far we’ve come with the rebuild in Christchurch East. Beyond the residential, we can all pat ourselves on the back for the following:

Social housing The Government has poured a massive investment into social housing from Aranui to Shirley, and continues to actively build as part of its social housing programme. These new, warm and healthy homes are benefiting plenty of Christchurch East families and sprucing up the neighbourhood!

The Force is with you, Christchurch East

Education

The National-led Government is investing $503 million to provide new staff and police services across New Zealand. That means a total of 1125 new police staff – including 880 frontline officers – over the next four years. The Canterbury Police District, including Christchurch East, will get an additional 10 boys (and girls!) in blue over the next year to focus on child protection, adult sexual assault and serious crime in our community. And that’s just the beginning.

The Government has invested in three new primary schools: $10.2m for Marshlands; $14.5m for Waitakiri and $13.6 for Rawhiti. Of course, we’ve also got the fabulous new Haeta at $298m.

The additional staff will boost police force capacity and help achieve better outcomes for all. The first recruits will be on the beat in July.

New Brighton redevelopment It may seem like there’s not a lot happening on the ground in New Brighton yet, but there’s plenty of work going on behind the scenes.

Hospitals The new Burwood Hospital, at $215m, is truly a state-of-the-art facility and a fantastic asset for the East.

I have frequently voiced my support for the new hot water salt pools and redevelopment, and I’m actively working with the Business Association of New Brighton to identify potential investors in the area’s future. New Brighton has such a vibrant and steadfast community and it’s going to take all of us – Government, CCC and community - to create the future that we want for the area. As a side-note, it was an absolute pleasure to host New Brighton artists at Parliament last year!

Emergency housing support

We were contacted about an elderly woman in urgent need of re-housing. We successfully found her a home and helped source furniture as well.

School bullying

Teachers and parents at a local Christchurch East school approached us about ongoing bullying problems. I met with the principal and we’re monitoring the issue together.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Watch

I head out on watch duty on a Friday night whenever I can with one of the committed Watch members.

Contact me anytime Business Let’s not forget that the Government also funded some Christchurch East businesses immediately after the earthquakes so that they could retain staff and run their businesses. The business owners I know are hugely appreciative of the investment, which has allowed them to continue thriving and operating out of the electorate.

Sometimes it’s not until we look back that we realise how far we’ve come with the rebuild in Christchurch East. Beyond the residential, we can all pat ourselves on the back for the following:

Education

The Government has invested in three new primary schools: $10.2m for Marshlands; $14.5m for Waitakiri and $13.6 for Rawhiti. Of course, we’ve also got the fabulous new Haeta at $298m.

The additional staff will boost police force capacity and help achieve better outcomes for all. The first recruits will be on the beat in July.

Budget a big win for Christchurch East families

The Government’s budget on 25 May is great news for Christchurch East families. Here are a few highlights in case you missed it:

A $2 billion a year Family Incomes Package that will help hard working New Zealanders get ahead. The package will lift the incomes of 1.3 million families by an average of $26 a week. $4 billion to help build the public infrastructure we need as a growing economy, as well as additional funding to strengthen the Business Growth Agenda to help drive further economic growth, create jobs, and lift wages. $7 billion new investment in public services like health, education, and law and order over the next four years, including $321 million in social investment initiatives to help the most at-risk New Zealanders become more independent.

This is an exciting budget that puts more money into the back pockets of those who need it most - low and middle-income earners with young families and higher housing costs. By getting the economy growing again and putting the Government’s books back in order we’ve given ourselves choices that few other countries have. We can fund new initiatives that will make a difference to people’s lives. Some of those include:

An additional $224 million over four years for mental health services. $37 million to improve the safety of family violence victims and stop family violence escalating. $185 million to further expand social housing services. $424 million for the new Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki.
